The first step anyone making a self move should make is to get an estimate of how much the move will cost you. Fill out the self move estimate form below and we will give you a no-obligation, free self move estimate for moving to or from Florida or any state you choose. 60-90 days before your Self Move;

1. Create a system to help you keep track of all of your Self Move expenses. You will need a record for any possible tax-deductions as well as being able to track your expenses during your move.

2. Write out an inventory of all of your possessions and estimate their value and estimates weight where appropriate. Decide what items you want to leave behind. Hold a garage or yard sale. Donate what isn't sold to charity and ask for a tax receipt. Take items to the Thrift Shop and make a little extra money for your Self Move.

3. Get a Self Move Estimate by filling out the form above if you have not done so yet.

4. Create a File for each family member, including yourself. It should contain;

a. Their Birth Certificate (original).
b. Their Immunization records. make sure immunizations are up-to-date.
c. Their Social Security Number.
d. Their Passport (if needed).
e. Their ID card for any child 10 years or older. Renew Their ID if necessary.
f. Their Adoption papers.

5. Create a Travel Records Kit - It should include;

a. Travelers checks
b. Your PCS orders if military, (multiple copies)
c. Insurance policies (vehicle, life, health, umbrella liability)
d. Your Marriage or divorce papers
e. Immunization records for your pets
f. Copy of wills
g. Serial numbers (of your electronic equipment. Photos of the equipment and other valuables is also a good idea to show what condition they were in when you started your DITY Move.)
h. Your children’s medical, dental, optical records
i. Your Financial and investment records
j. Your Charge and credit card account information
k. Truck rental agreements
l. School transcripts and referring letters.
m. Your Car registration(s) and insurance.
n. Your State and Federal tax records.
o. Deeds or mortgages.
p. Professional licenses.

6. Talk with your family about your Self Move. Listen to your children’s concerns and discuss as much as you can about the move with them.

50 Days before your Self Move

1. Set a moving date, if you have not already done so.

2. Book Motel or Hotel Rooms far in advance. You can save money by reserving rooms in advance of your trip. It's also good to have your trip well-planned. Remember many motels do not allow pets.

3. If you rent, remember to give notice to your landlord. 30-day written notice is usually required if you want to recover your security deposit. Set a date for the landlord to inspect your apartment or home after the movers have packed your household goods.

4.Make all of the necessary medical, optical and dental appointments and get any necessary immunizations. Make sure all of your medical records are placed in your Travel Records Kit.

5. Check your homeowners insurance to determine if you have any transit coverage. Some policies have no coverage for transit items and others only cover items at one specified location. In some insurance policies 100 percent coverage expires after 30 days. Some policies only cover major perils and not rough handling, mysterious disappearances, etc.

6. If you took out a car loan to buy your car and are still making payments, notify your bank of your move. Check with your bank to see if they will permit you to ship your car overseas if you are doing an International move.

7. Write out a general inventory and list items by room. Closet, attic, kitchen, garage, bedroom, etc. List all household and personal possessions. It will help you when unpacking at your new housing and will be useful in making an accurate estimate of their value for insurance purposes.

8. Repair and clean all items that you plan on putting into self storage or having shipped.

9. Get a written appraisal for valuables like antiques, jewelry, furs, coin collections, and paintings. Always use a professional appraiser who deals in the kind of valuables you own.

10. Help your children do an inventory of their rooms. Figure out which small toys and/or games to pack in their suitcase.

11. Get your Moving Boxes and Packing Supplies. We delivery them right to your door for free.

40 Days before your Self Move;

1.Notify necessary people and organizations such as doctors, dentists, charge accounts, clubs, insurance companies, magazine subscriptions, accountants, broker or investment adviser, schools, friends, relatives and religious institutions about your move. Start to notify a few every day.

2. Get a change of address kit from your local post office.

3. Open a new bank account at your new location. You can do this by mail, online, or by phone, and get a safe deposit box, if necessary. Apply for new bank debit (ATM) cards if you use them. Determine your bank card rate and look into getting a lower-rate bank card. Set up local retail charge accounts, if desired.

4. Locate an insurance agent in your new area for auto, home, renters, boat, umbrella liability, and other necessary coverage. Shop around for the best coverage and rates. Your FSC Personal Financial Manager is a valuable resource for this information.

5.If you do not have an address at your new location yet, get a P.O. Box or get a general delivery address at the military post office at your new base.

6. If you have a child that uses day care, call Child Care Centers at your destination in advance to make sure there are openings.

7. Use things you can’t move, such as food, cleaning supplies, and flammables.

30 Days before your Self Move;

1. Your spouse and other family members who are employed should update their resumes and send them to prospective employers. They should also give notice to their employer and ask for references.

2. Go over your finances. Be sure of your mode of travel (car, plane) and estimated expenses avoid over or under estimating your expenses.

3. Have all vehicles maintenanced to be sure they are ready for travel use or being transported. To get a free auto move estimate, click here.

4. Call ahead about services, like; school calendars and enrollment requirements, religious institutions and how to get new drivers licenses and license plates. Get the names, phone numbers and deposit requirements of local water, power and heating utility companies at your new location. The Internet can also help you find a lot of information about your new location.

5. Let your child's current school of your child’s last day and request a copy of your child’s school records. If you cannot get the records, get the address of the current school so the new school can write and ask for them.

6. Other important records to take with you;

a. Academic Achievement Reports (tests, report cards, transcripts).
b. Psychological Evaluations
c. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech, Language Evaluations.
d. Current and past Individual Educational Plans (IEP)
e. Behavioral/Social evaluations
f. Vocational evaluations (interest, skills, attitudes)
g. Medications

7. Certain household goods are classified as Dangerous Goods. They cannot be accepted for transport, but please discuss your specific concerns/requirements with us at 888-875-4285.

Dangerous Goods include:

a. Alcohol, Photographic Developer, Oils, Corrosives: e.g. Ammunition, Flares, Fireworks, Black Powder
b. Firearms: e.g. Military Weapons, Fully Automatic Weapons, Handguns. Exemptions are: Air Rifles and Replicas (non-firing). Hunting and Sporting Rifles (including ex-military, non-automatic) and Handguns (where copy of current registration is produced) will only be accepted where firing mechanisms have been dismantled or removed. Weapons must not contain live ammunition. Be aware that overseas locations have varying laws regarding the import of firearms check with the TMO if you have any questions.
c. Flammable Gases: e.g. Oxygen, Acetylene, Chlorine Gas, Methane
d. Flammable Liquids: e.g. Petrol, Kerosene, Paints, Varnish, Turpentine, Methylated Spirit, Pure Alcohol, Oil. Radioactive Materials.
e. Toxins & Poisons: e.g. Pesticides, Weed Killer, Polishes, Arsenic.
f. Miscellaneous: e.g. Gas Cylinders, Aerosol Cans, Matches, Butane Lighters,Irritants, Life Rafts, Pressurized Vessels, Explosive Devices. Please Note: Scuba Tanks can be carried provided they are completely empty. and valves are fully open or removed entirely. To dispose of household chemicals, call Hazardous Waste Control Facility

21 Days before your Self Move;

1. Begin packing a few boxes each day. Click here if you need moving boxes and packing supplies.

2. Schedule pickup and delivery dates with with Wehaul Moving by calling 888.876.4285 or using the form at the top of this page and arrange for self storage.

3. Contact your current utility companies to end service on the day after your self move. Have them send your final utility bill to your new address.

4. Check your bank's procedures for transferring funds or closing your account. Get a letter of credit or have enough cash in case deposits are required for utilities at your new home.

5. Decide which fragile, irreplaceable, valuable or other important items you plan to take with you in your personal vehicle and which ones can be safely packed for the carrier to transport.

6. Set up an appointment for the vet clinic for required vaccinations and licenses. Get your pet's medical records. Visit the FSC Relocation Assistance Program for more information about traveling with pets.

7. Make all needed repairs to your current home and clean it prior to inspection by your landlord, real estate agent or prospective new owner.

8. Take your clothes to be dry-cleaned or laundered.

9. Retrieve anything you have loaned to someone else and return any items you have borrowed.

14 Days Days before your Self Move;

1. Review your Self Move Budget. Think about things like motels. Make sure you have enough cash or travelers checks to carry you over during the move. Include utility deposits, closing costs on your new home, meals, and pet expenses.

2. Buy travelers checks to finance your move (not counting paying the carrier).

3. Settle all of your local retail charge accounts and outstanding local bills in your current location.

7 Days before your Self Move;

1. Verify the moving schedule for your commercial carrier. If you are moving from a high-rise apartment building, reserve the freight elevator for moving day.

2. Drain all of the oil and gas from your lawnmowers, chain saws, etc.

3. Label all moving boxes and other items you will be putting into self storage. Include the rooms in which the items belong on the labels. You can even mark which boxes you want to be first off the truck. These "early out" boxes should contain the items you need to help you set up housekeeping immediately, like linens, dishes, tableware, etc. Click here if you need a self storage quote.

4. Pick up clothes from your dry cleaners.

5. Pick up medical and dental records. Either parent may pick up the records of children under age 18.

6. Cancel regular services and deliveries like newspaper and garbage, as of moving day.

7. It's a good idea to give a going-away party for your children.

8. Pack your special care or irreplaceable items you want to take with you personally. If you will be traveling by car, pack a Field Kit for emergencies on the way.

Field Kit -- Useful Contents:

Emergency food, Water, Large and small plastic bags, First aid kit, sunscreen, Sunglasses, Prescription medications, Travel alarm, Extra pairs of eyeglasses, Tool kit, Toilet and facial tissues, Paper plates, plastic forks, etc., Flashlight, Soap, cleaning supplies, Pet food, toys, Baby food, formula, diapers, wipes, etc.

9. Arrange for people at your new location to help you unload.

3 Days before your Self Move;

1. Final packing and preparation; Remove TV antennas. Empty the refrigerator at least 24 hours before the movers arrive so it will be dry. Dismantle stereos, outdoor play equipment, etc. Take curtains, rods, shelves, and items down and pack them. Don't forget items in storage areas like attics and crawl spaces.

2. Put luggage and other things you are taking with you in your vehicle. Lock the Travel Records Kit and other valuables in the trunk.

3. Owner-packed cartons must be left open so the carrier can inspect them to see if they need repackaging before they accept liability.

4. Be sure to arrange for utilities to be connected at your new home before you or the movers arrive.

Moving Day;

5. Be present when the movers arrive. Take inventory with them. Label your furniture and record what condition they are in. Compare your inventory list with the carrier's inventory list. Check for damage claimed by the carrier on each piece and make notes on your inventory list. You'll need to sign the mover's inventory list and Statement of Accessorial Services Performed (DD619-1). Thorough inspect the house - attic, basement, closets, cupboards, garage and yard before the movers leave to be sure nothing important is left behind. Keep all shipping documents in your possession during the trip.

6. Make sure pets are secured on moving day. Put cats and small dogs in carriers. Tie larger dogs outside and out of the way.

Traveling; Keep a log of all moving expenses incurred. This log may be helpful at tax time. Keep all your receipts. If you and your family are traveling separately, keep two logs. Keep receipts on the following items: Rentals, air/bus/rail fares, gasoline (accurate mileage), meals, rent deposits, utility deposits, and installation charges.
